A History of American Football

The rest of the world knows it as American football, but the Americans call it football. Since there are various types of football - soccer and rugby - it’s essential to know the difference between them. Two teams of eleven players each compete on a rectangular field that contains two goalposts on either end. Otherwise known as gridiron, the offensive team with possession of the ball must attempt to reach their opponents’ end zone. They can do this by passing and running with the ball. However, the team without the ball aims to halt the progress of the attacking team and win control of the ball.

The premise of the game requires the attacking team to gain at least ten yards within the space of four plays or downs as it’s known. If they’re successful, they receive another set of downs to progress further but if the opposition stops them, then they surrender control of the ball. Teams receive points for reaching the opposition’s end zone, which is referred to as a touchdown. Alternatively, kicking the ball through the goalposts of the opposition results in a field goal. The team with the most points at the end wins the game.

Records state that the first American football match took place on the 6th of November 1869 between Princeton and Rutgers, who were colleges. Rutgers won that game 6-4. Other colleges met and established a standard set of rules for school football. Yale player Walter Camp is known as the Father of American Football because he created the snap, line of scrimmage, number of players, and the concept of downs back in 1880. Additionally, the scoring system adjusted to four points for a touchdown, two points for the goal after the touchdown and a safety, and five points for a goal from the field.

After some serious injuries, the sport was thought of as being too dangerous, with President Roosevelt aiming to ban football. A meeting between 62 colleges resulted in more rule changes and the formation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association or the NCAA. In 1925, the National Football League became popular after the Pottsville Maroons beat the all-star Notre Dame when they emphasized the passing game. Years later, in 1958, a championship match between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants became the greatest match of all time. The Colts won in overtime with a scoreline of 23-17.

Currently, scoring a touchdown gets a team six points, while a conversion attempt, also known as Points-After-Touchdown (PAT), is worth one point from a placed or dropped kick and two points from a touchdown. A field goal scores a team three points, and safeties are two points.

The NFL currently has the highest average attendance of professional sports leagues around the globe. The sport is now the most popular in the United States with professional and college leagues being the pinnacle. The championship game is the Super Bowl which is one of the most-watched television events in the world. This fixture is played between the champions of the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. The winning team gets to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The team with the most titles is the Green Bay Packers, who won 13 titles with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots winning six titles each since the commencement of the Super Bowl.
