Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that has many similarities to its rival game, League of Legends. And like LoL, Dota 2 is a beast of a game with a gargantuan audience that spans across the globe. Dota 2 has a strong following in China, which adds a solid lump to the fanbase, and over 25 million fans worldwide tune in to watch The International each year.
The International (TI) is Dota 2’s biggest tournament, which attracts the best teams from around the world who fight it out for a prize pool that is crowd funded by the fans. Last year's TI9 had a prize pool that exceeded $34 million, which makes it one of the largest prize pools for any sport, including traditional sports, in the world. With so much at stake, the teams play with a passion and intensity that’s stunningly powerful, and this translates through to the fans. And this passion makes placing Dota 2 bets a nerve shattering yet thrilling experience.
It is no secret that The International is the centerpoint of the Dota 2 world. This comes as no surprise considering the prize pool for last year’s event exceeded $34 million! Since The International’s inception in 2011, the prize pool for the event has been on a steady rise and is not showing any signs of slowing down. Throughout the year teams play in a series of minor and major Dota 2 tournaments with prize pools that vary from $100k up to $1 million, providing ample opportunities to place Dota 2 bets. With TI9 now behind us, it might be appropriate to talk about what we can expect for the year ahead.
Valve announced that The International 2020 is likely to be delayed until next year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual Dota 2 tournament was set to take place in Stockholm this August and offer the biggest esports prize pool of the year. The team behind the tournament posted the announcement on Dota 2’s official website. Addressing the unfortunate global situation today and how it’s affecting the esports community, the team wrote: “We have been exploring various date possibilities, but it is likely that the event will need to happen in 2021… Given the highly volatile landscape for local gathering restrictions, virus trajectory, and global travel policies, we don’t expect to have enough confidence to communicate firm dates in the near future. In the meantime, we are working on restructuring the DPC season for the fall, and will be providing more information as soon as we have it.”
The delay was understandable. Aside from the global travel and event restrictions brought about by the pandemic, Valve wouldn’t be able to reach the highest prize pool mark for TI this year if everyone’s at home. The 10th TI prize pool will come from the sales of the TI10 Battle Pass. Valve needs 25% of the total sales to push through with the event, but since everyone, especially players and fans are affected by the pandemic, the sales might be lower than expected. TI10 Battle Pass was released on May 25th, and up to this day, the TI10 prize pool exceeds $24 million. Valve aims to surpass last year’s prize pool which is $34 million. The two-time champion, OG Esports, took home the $15,609,384 grand prize in Shanghai last year. The International 2020 has no definite date yet. Health experts are discouraging sports and esports organizations to hold massive gatherings in the meantime. If some of the Dota 2 major tournaments return in 2020, they will most likely be held online or in a private arena without an audience.
I am feeling that Team Secret will lay their mark The International 10, and they are my pick for a dota bet for the outright winner for TI10. It's a big call and it's early in the season and new teams can emerge, and solid teams can fall away, but be sure to keep one eye on Puppey and his squad.

It is no secret that The International is the centerpoint of the Dota 2 world. This comes as no surprise considering the prize pool for this year’s event exceeded $25.5 million!
With TI8 now behind us, it might be appropriate to talk about what we can expect for the year ahead. The International 2019 (TI9) will be held in China for the first time. The International has never had a player or organisation win twice, but with every year that passes a double up can't be too far away and may well be in store for TI9.
TI8 broke the alternating, Eastern/Western TI victors. The western team, OG won the TI8 and while I like the idea of a Chinese team winning on their home soil at TI9, I have great expectations for the Russian Team, Virtus.Pro. They've had many strong showings in the past and have always been one step away from glory.
I am feeling that TI9 will mark the end of Virtus.Pro's dry spell, and they are my pick for a dota bet for the outright winner for TI9.
It's a big call and it's early in the season and new teams can emerge, and solid teams can fall away, but be sure to keep one eye on the Russian bears.

| Market Type | Description | | ---------- | ---------- | | __Winner __ | The most common type of bet is to bet outright on a ‘winner’ market. As an example this would be to place a bet on Virtus Pro to beat Team Liquid. | |Map Handicap | A handicap is introduced on the better team, setting a margin, which effectively makes the game equal. For example you may place a bet on ‘Map 1: Virtus Pro to win -1.5’. This means you are betting on Virtus Pro to win more maps than Team Liquid but because Virtus Pro are considered the better team they start at minus (-1.5), meaning they need to win 1.5 more maps than Team Liquid to win. This would be in a scenario when the teams play a best of 3 or best of 5 maps. | | Total Maps, Correct Score | When teams play a best of 2,3 or 5 map matches: Pick the correct score in a best of 2 map. Example 1:1. Pick the correct score in a best of 3 map. Example 2:1. Pick the correct score in a best of 5 map. Example 3:2 | | __1st Map - Winner __ | Pick the team to win the first map. | | __2nd Map - Winner __ | Pick the team to win the second map. | | 3rd Map - Winner | Pick the team to win the third map. | | __1st Map - Draw no bet __ | If you bet a team to win with ‘draw no bet’ odds, if the match results in a draw, your stake is refunded. | | __1st Map - Kill Handicap __ | A handicap is introduced on the better team, setting a margin, which effectively makes the game equal. For example you may place a bet on ‘Map 1 Most Kills: Virtus Pro -4.5’. This means you are betting on Virtus Pro to get more kills than Team Liquid but because Virtus Pro are considered the better team they start at minus (-4.5), meaning they need to get 4.5 more kills than Team Liquid to win. | | __1st Map - 1st Tower __ | Pick the team to destroy the first tower. | | __1st Map - 1st Barracks __ | Pick the team to destroyed the first Barracks. | | __1st Map - 1st Aegis __ | Pick the team to collect the first Aegis. | | Outrights | Outrights is when you place a bet on a team to reach the quarter finals, semi finals, or win an entire tournament. |
