The League of Legends Continental League (LCL) is the last big professional League of Legends league that hasn’t started. However this will change soon as the league is starting this Saturday.

Competition Information

The League of Legends Continental League (LCL) is the top level of professional League of Legends competition that is organized by Riot Games Russia in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region. LCL is replacing the SLTV StarSeries that has been organized by StarLadder since 2016. There are eight teams in the competition. Each annual season of play is divided into two splits, spring and summer, both consisting of five weeks of double round-robin tournament play, which then conclude with a play-off single elimination tournament between the top four teams. The winners of each split qualifies for the Mid-Season Invitational and the World Championship.

LCL Spring 2020 will feature a prize pool of 5,000,000 Russian Rubles which is around $75,000. During the Spring split both the group stage MVP and the playoff MVP will be picked. Officially, LCL Spring Season 2020 is starting this Saturday, February 22nd and will end somewhere in May, 2020.

Let’s just remind ourselves of the previous 2019 split winners. LCL Spring 2019 split was won by Vega Squadron, who represented CIS region at the Mid Season Invitational. LCL Summer 2019 was won by Unicorns of Love who won vs Vega Squadron in the LCL playoffs with a 3-2 score and qualified for Worlds 2019.

The Current Season

The eight best teams in the region are ready to fight again, not just for MSI and Worlds 2020, but for death as part of the first season after the anniversary year of League of Legends esports. We will inform you about the upcoming season and changes in the composition of teams.

Gambit Esports signed two Danes to fill out their roster. Elements Pro Gaming are planning a fight for the first place again, combining a number of hungry veterans in the hope of achieving victories. Vaevictis Esports will miss the 2020 season. Apart from Team Just’s reincarnation as Unicorns of Love, the Continental League will change for the first time in 2 years. Vaevictis Esports will not participate in the LCL in the upcoming season. There were strong performances in the organization’s history, for example, in 2017 Vaevictis were in the immediate vicinity of the championship, losing only to Virtus.Pro in the spring split final. But, unfortunately, the results of the 2019 season showed a huge difference in VAE results compared to other LCL teams, which is an unacceptable level of competitiveness in a closed league system.

In this regard, Vaevictis Esports will skip the Continental League season 2020. Let’s remember, Vaevictis Esports featured all female lineup in the 2019 season of LCL, which raised a lot of questions. At the same time, the organization will be able to participate in the CIS Open Cup and has a chance to return to LCL next year. CrowCrowd joined the ranks of the best CIS teams, who are well known from performances at semi-professional tournaments. “Ravens” have repeatedly tried to break into the LCL through the Challenger stage, and they also won the championship at the Open Cup of the Mayor in 2018. Vega Squadron returns to LCL with a new young hungry lineup with relatively unknown players.

Thus, the full list of teams participating in the LCL 2020 Spring split is:

  • 🇷🇺 CrowCrowd
  • 🇷🇺 Dragon Army
  • 🇷🇺 Elements Pro Gaming
  • 🇷🇺 Gambit Esports
  • 🇷🇺 M19
  • 🇷🇺 Rox
  • 🇷🇺 Unicorns of Love
  • 🇷🇺 Vega Squadron

The Kontinental League starts on February 22, and the organizers will announce the full schedule very soon.

Betting Tips & Picks

If we look at previous seasons of LCL and current squads and lineups, the biggest favourites to take this Spring split are Unicorns of Love and Gambit Esports. Yes, Unicorns are not the same team as they were last season as they changed 2 players, but they did pretty good job with the new picks. On the other side Gambit added Edward who previously played for Unicorns of Love, so that should bring extra confidence and experience into their squad. Those two teams will surely end up in the top 4 of the LCL Spring 2020 season. Who will win the playoffs? My bet is Unicorns of Love. This will be another exciting season of LCL.
