It is time for another excellent LAN event with IEM Dallas set to get underway in Texas, USA.

The Intel Extreme Masters usually attracts some big names and this event is no exception. Big hitters FaZe Clan will look to continue their hot-streak after becoming major champions in Antwerp, while the likes of G2 and Vitality will look to bounce back after a disappointing showing at the major.

Let’s have a quick glance at the format.

The Format

FaZe are coming in hot after taking out NaVi in the grand finals of the PGL Antwerp major. They should remain motivated, as a win at this event would inch them closer to the coveted Grand Slam title that would make FaZe a million dollars richer. The only thing that speaks against FaZe is that they have the far more difficult bracket, but with three teams making it out, FaZe should advance to the playoffs without much of an issue. Come playoff time, they will be hard to beat.

G2 may have had a disappointing major, but they will still be one of the favourites for the title at this event. While Group A is very competitive, I’d argue that they have received the more favourable half of the bracket compared to FaZe. They open up against Movistar Riders, and if they were to get past them, they will take on the winner between mouz and an ENCE side that is playing with a stand-in.

Like G2 and Vitality, C9 had a pretty disappointing showing at the major. Perhaps the recent matchfixing accusations aimed towards Hobbit did in fact impact the team a bit at the major, who knows. While their mental game might be in question, the quality and pedigree are enough to challenge for the title in Texas. I personally like teams like FaZe and G2 a whole lot more, but do not underestimate Cloud9.

FURIA showed up in a big way at the Antwerp major, beating out G2 to secure a spot in the playoffs. The books have FURIA as one of the favourites for the title, and with a fairly easy group, they should make playoffs with little of an issue. With that said, I do question if they have what it takes to make a run once they get there.

Dark Horses

There are two teams that stand out as undervalued by the books. Astralis and Vitality. The two take on each other in the opening match and likely only one will make playoffs with how stacked Group A is. Both Astralis and Vitality had a disappointing showing at the Antwerp Major, like many of the big names did, but with teams like ENCE and NiP having to use stand-ins at this event, this could be the time for them to shine.
