fnatic have announced the signing of Owen “smooya” Butterfield on a three-month trial.

The British AWPer comes in to replace Jack “Jackinho” Ström Mattson, who was benched following a disappointing campaign at IEM Fall which saw fnatic fail to make the major.

The 22-year-old recently plied his trade with Spanish organisation, Movistar Riders, where he posted an overall rating of 1.25 in 170 maps played. He is perhaps most known for his time on the German team, BIG, where he played alongside the likes of Ismailcan “XANTARES” Dörtkardeş and Johannes “tabseN” Wodarz.

smooya has already made his debut as a stand-in for fnatic in the IEM Winter European qualifier, where he helped fnatic achieve wins against GamerLegion, K23 and Galaxy Racer.

smooya expressed his happiness in a statement on twitter:

“For those who enjoyed the British Fnatic flag, you’re about to be really excited for a LONG time,” smooya said in the statement. “This is a situation that I never thought I would see myself in because of my past mistakes throughout my career but all I can say is thank you to Samuelsson for believing in me so much by putting his own reputation on the line to secure this move.”

“I’ve been waiting for a chance like this for years and I think now is the perfect time for this to happen.”

smooya is set to make his official debut for fnatic in the second part of the IEM Winter qualifier, which will start on October 18th.
