Beyond the Summit returns with the DOTA Summit 12! The surprising announcement at the beginning of March came only ten days before the tournament was to be held.

Competition Information

Set to fill the void in between the StarLadder ImbaTV Minor and the ESL One Los Angeles Major, Dota Summit 12 found all of the six teams that will fight for the title and a share of the $150,000 prize. The championship will be held from March 10 to 13 in Los Angeles. The venue will be Summit House.

The event is a welcome return to the DOTA Summit series of tournaments. After an absence in 2018, DOTA Summit 10 marked the return of the event in 2019. This was followed up shortly after with DOTA Summit 11, the first of the series to be an official Dota Pro Circuit event. Summit events have typically maintained a casual and light-hearted tone, with the earliest editions being held out of the BTS house in Los Angeles. The more recent tournaments have maintained the style, although were noticeably toned down for Summit 11. The eleventh season of the DOTA Summit was the first minor in the current Dota Pro Circuit. The winners of the event then were Invictus Gaming, who took with them the main reward in the form of $72,000 and 140 Dota Pro Circuit points. With DOTA Summit 12’s announcement teasing a horror theme and sporting a nostalgic soundtrack, it looks like a return to form for the event. DOTA Summit 12 will be broadcast on BTS’s official Twitch channel.

The Current Season

The six teams vying for the lion’s share of a $150,000 prize pool on March 10-13 at Dota Summit 12 are:

  • 🇺🇸 Evil Geniuses
  • 🇵🇭 Fnatic
  • 🇪🇺 OG Seed
  • 🇪🇺 Team Liquid
  • 🇵🇪 Thunder Predator
  • 🇺🇸 Cloud9

EG, Fnatic, and Thunder Predator are notably among the teams qualified for the ESL One Los Angeles Major, which is set to begin shortly after Dota Summit 12 on March 15. Meanwhile, OG.Seed, Liquid, and C9 did not qualify for the Major. The tournament might serve as the practice ground for EG and Fnatic before the big tournament. The downside will be that their chosen play styles and drafts are publicly streamed to their opponents.

EG recently dominated the North America qualifier of ESL One Los Angeles. The team has managed some great placements in the previous major tournaments this season, but has repeatedly fallen short of claiming a title. The team might build its momentum at Dota Summit 12 to finally claim a major title under its belt.

Fnatic did not have a flawless run in the Southeast Asian qualifier of ESL One Los Angeles, but still managed to take the first ticket to the major event. This is a highly anticipated debut event for OG Seed. The tournament will mark the first LAN event for the prodigies of the two-time TI champions. OG Seed aims to carve out a more significant spot in the Europe scene. However, the team was often trampled by the region’s powerhouse teams during qualifiers. Johan “N0tail” Sundstein is the current coach of OG Seed. This could potentially conflict with the schedule of the OG’s captain as OG prepares for ESL One Los Angeles.

The tournament will have South American representation in Thunder Predator. The full Peruvian squad qualified for the ESL One Los Angeles Major by beating beastcoast in the SA qualifiers, proving that they’re a force to be reckoned with. Both Liquid and C9 didn’t qualify for the L.A. Major, though. Liquid were one of the few victims of a stacked field at the European qualifiers that consisted of the two most recent teams that won The International in Nigma and OG, Leipzig’s Major winner Team Secret, and perennial dark horses Alliance and Ninjas in Pyjamas. C9 has quickly sought out EternaLEnVy’s services once again after announcing its return to Dota 2 in January. This will be the revamped roster’s first showing at a tournament and the polarizing EternaLEnVy will certainly earn his moments of fanfare at the Summit.

Dota Summit 12 will have a round-robin format for its Group Stage, where four of the participating teams will advance while the bottom two will be eliminated. The playoffs will be a double-elimination bracket with all matches being a best-of-three except for the finals, which will be a best-of-five series.

Picklebet Betting Tips & Picks

Evil Geniuses are a three-time winner of the competition, claiming the inaugural Summit title in June 2014 and winning The Summit 4 in December 2015 and The Summit 9 in July 2018. And I think they are the biggest favourite to take The Summit 12 too. Here are the Picklebet outright odds for the Dota Summit 12 winner:

  1. Evil Geniuses @ 1.63
  2. Team Liquid @ 4.33
  3. Fnatic @ 6.76
  4. Cloud9 @ 18.79
  5. Thunder Predator @ 20.34
  6. OG Seed @ 40.43

I think that OG Seed, Thunder and Cloud9 have absolutely no chance in taking this trophy home. EG is the biggest favourite and there is a decent value in betting on their victory. Liquid and Fnatic are potential contenders for the throne and they could surprise us, but this is a tournament made for Evil Geniuses. In the end, they are one of the best teams in the world right now, together with Team Secret and Vici Gaming.
