Astralis dethrone Liquid to become top-ranked CS:GO team

Astralis’ rise

Astralis broke their five-month run without a title by winning the StarLadder Major in Berlin. They followed it up with quality performances in ESL One New York (runners-up after losing to Evil Geniuses in the final) and the DreamHack Masters in Malmo last week. This period of terrific form saw them jump one place, from No. 2.

Liquid’s fall

At one point this year, Liquid were cruising through opponents for fun. They even won six successive Big Event tournaments. But their form quickly spiralled downwards thereafter. At the Berlin Major, they placed 5th to 8th, which included a defeat to Astralis. At ESL One in New York, they placed 3rd to 4th. At the DreamHack Masters in Malmo, they finished 9th to 12th after enduring a shocking upset at the hands of Grayhound Gaming 2-0.

Malmo was the first time Liquid failed to qualify for the playoffs of a Big Event this year. In this period, Liquid accumulated just 69 “form” points in the rankings, the lowest tally for any team in the top five in the world.

Ranking difference

Astralis currently sit atop the rankings with 897 points. Liquid, with 822 points, are 75 points behind. Evil Geniuses made a big leap to No. 3 after stunning Astralis to win the ESL One New York. Fnatic moved to fourth place after winning the DreamHack Masters Malmo. Avangar, who have also enjoyed a fine run of form including a runners-up finish at the Berlin Major, are now positioned fifth.

Upcoming titles

Both Astralis and Liquid will take part in the 10th season of the ESL Pro League. Astralis will face Fnatic, North and Aristocracy. Liquid will face Renegades and two opponents yet to be determined. Team Liquid will look to make up some ground on Astralis before the next Big Event, the BLAST Pro Series Copenhagen, on November 1 and 2.
